Report: Iverson to retire from NBA

Allen Iverson will reportedly announce his retirement very soon.

Allen Iverson is finally calling it quits. The former Sixers icon has been in the news a lot recently, more for his off-the-court problems resulting from his divorce than playing basketball. Still, Iverson was reportedly interested in making a comeback.

Apparently, that isn’t going to happen. Iverson will announce his official retirement from the NBA in the next few days, according to Slam Magazine. He last appeared in an NBA game in 2010 as a member of the Sixers, and his last professional game came back in 2011 in Turkey. Iverson appeared at a game on March 30 at the Wells Fargo Center when he was honored with a bobblehead. He addressed the crowd with his trademark hand-to-ear gesture.

“It’s always good to come back to Philadelphia,” said Iverson at the time. “I’m excited to be there for my bobblehead night, see the team and hear the roar of the fans I love.”

Iverson also spoke at length about his future. He expressed a desire to return to the NBA, but explained that taking care of his family was even more important if that didn’t happen.

“My No. 1 goal is trying to accomplish to be the best dad that I can. And if basketball is in my near future, then God will make that happen,” Iverson said. “But if not, I had a great ride and I’ve done a lot of special things that a lot of guys have not been able to accomplish and people thought I couldn’t accomplish.”
