The roller derby player who was wounded in a shocking domestic violence case will get some support from friends and teammates during a fundraiser Friday at the Delaware River Waterfront.
The Philly Roller Derby originally just planned a 10th anniversary party at Riverrink, but it became a fundraiser for 37-year-old Danecia Berrian, known in derby as Nina Knockout, after she was critically wounded along with her infant daughter during an attack by her husband three weeks ago. “There has been this outpouring of love since then,” said Philly Roller Derby vice president Kristen Herrmann.
“What better than to have everybody form together … especially with her being one of the founding first members of our league?”
Herrmann recalled Berrian’s performance with Philly’s Liberty Belles when they trounced the New York team Gotham in a tournament as particularly legendary.
“She’s huge in the world of derby,” Herrmann said. “She knows it’s going to be a long recovery, but she’s doing well.”
The fundraiser/anniversary party begins at 7 pm Aug. 21 at the Riverrink.
All proceeds from the party will go to Berrian’s family.
A Gofundmepagehas also been set up to support the family.
Berrian’s husband, Stephen Burton, is in custody and faces charges of attempted murder for the incident.
