SEPTA police officer attacked on subway platform

A SEPTA police officer was attacked on the platform of a Broad Street Subway station this morning by a person who appeared mentally ill, officials said.

The attack happened around 10 a.m. at the Walnut-Locust Station. The officer was on the northbound platform when a man allegedly began assaulting the officer unprovoked using martial arts, according to SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch.

Two SEPTA officers arrived on the scene and helped to subdue the attacker, who was taken into custody. Busch said the suspect appeared to be mentally ill and possibly homeless. Officials have not released his name.

The officer was not injured, Busch said.
