With a 2.2 percent increase in ridership over the prior year, SEPTA Regional Rail reached a record number of passengers during fiscal year 2013, the transportation authority has announced.

SEPTA’s 13 Regional Rail lines had a total of 36,023,000 trips taken by customers between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013.

In the past 15 years, SEPTA Regional Rail has experienced a 50 percent increase in ridership, going from 24 million trips to 36 million trips annually.

“SEPTA is thrilled to welcome new riders to the system,” SEPTA general manager Joseph M. Casey said in a statement. “We will continue work on effortsto improve the customer experience, which is helping drive this sustained ridership growth.”

Casey pointed to infrastructure improvements and the addition of 120 new Silverliner V trains to SEPTA’s fleet.

Across SEPTA’s system, which includes buses, trolleys and trains, there were 337.3 million riders during fiscal year 2013, down slightly from 2012’s 339.3 million riders. SEPTA noted a two-day shutdown due to Superstorm Sandy hurt overall numbers.
