Settlement in fatal cop shooting

A federal jury found Philadelphia Police Officer Melvin Burton liable of unreasonable force in the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Raymond Pelzer after an April 2006 foot chase in West Philadelphia. The seven-person jury also cleared former Commissioner Sylvester Johnson, the City and the Police Department of complicity because of inadequate foot-chase training and policy.
Pelzer’s mother, Leslie, was awarded a six-figure settlement, but she said that “you can’t put a price on pain and suffering.”
