Shootings leave 2 dead, 8 injured

Two people were killed and eight others were wounded in a series of shootings Tuesday night into Wednesday morning in Philadelphia, police said.

Officers were called to the 200 block of Delphine Street in Olney just before 2 a.m. Wednesday and found a 38-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his head. The victim was rushed to Einstein Medical Center, where he died minutes later.

Earlier, 25-year-old Devonte Hunter died after being shot several times in the face and body at around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday while inside a car on the 6200 block of Ogontz Avenue in East Germantown, authorities said.

Detectives continue to investigate both killings, and police reported no arrests.

In 2021, 163 people have been murdered in Philadelphia, up 35% compared to this time last year. A total of 626 people have been shot, representing a 37% year-over-year increase, according to the police department.

A 19-year-old man was hospitalized after being shot in the left leg at around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday on the 5400 block of Berks Street in Overbrook. He was in stable condition, authorities said.

Investigators said a 35-year-old man was driving his truck just when a gunman walked up and fired several shots, striking him in both legs.

The shooting occurred at around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday near the corner of Harbison and Cheltenham avenues in the Wissinoming section of Northeast Philadelphia.

Police said the victim drove to a nearby police station and was transported to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital. His injuries are not expected to be life-threatening.

A 16-year-old boy was taken to Einstein with a wound to his shoulder after a shooting occurred at around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday at the corner of 17th Street and Chew Avenue, near Kemble Park in the Ogontz neighborhood.

His injuries were not life-threatening, according to police.

Minutes earlier, in a separate incident just after 10 p.m., a 26-year-old man was shot eight times, including twice in the chest, on the 6300 block of Frankford Avenue in Mayfair, authorities said.

Officers rushed him to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, and he is expected to survive.

In Kingsessing, two people were injured when shots rang out just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on the 5700 block of Thomas Avenue.

Police said a 35-year-old woman was shot in the buttocks and left calf, while a 26-year-old man sustained a wound to his left foot. Both were listed in stable condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

A 52-year-old man was in critical condition after a shooting inside a laundromat just after 9 p.m. Tuesday on the 5800 block of Market Street in West Philadelphia.

Authorities said the man was shot once in the head and twice in the leg. He is being treated at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

In North Philadelphia, a 36-year-old man was shot eight times in the chest and stomach just after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday on the 1000 block of W. Huntingdon Street. He was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition, according to police.

There was no word on arrests in any of the shootings.
