Six people were shot Sunday and early Monday in Philadelphia, police said, including a 29-year-old man who was killed in broad daylight in Kensington.
He died just after 5 p.m., about 15 minutes after officers were called to the 3000 block of N. Water Street for a report of a person with a gun. A 26-year-old man was also shot in the jaw, abdomen and left arm, and is in critical condition, authorities said.
Police identified the victim as Marcas Ortiz, of Hunting Park. Homicide detectives continue to investigate the shooting.
Officers were back in Kensington early Monday morning after a 17-year-old boy showed up to Episcopal Hospital with a gunshot wound to his back.
The boy arrived at the hospital at around 12:30 a.m. and fled before police got there, investigators said. His injuries were not life-threatening.
Authorities have not yet located the scene of the shooting.
In West Philadelphia, a 32-year-old man was shot multiple times in both legs at around 8:20 p.m. Sunday on Redfield Street near Ludlow Street, police said. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Earlier in the night, just after 7 p.m., a 40-year-old woman showed up to Temple University Hospital after being shot once in the left leg on the 500 block of W. York Street in North Philadelphia.
She is in stable condition, according to police.
Also in North Philadelphia, at around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, a 16-year-old boy was shot twice in the left leg at the corner of 19th and York streets. His injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said.
No arrests were reported in connection with any of the incidents.
Woman seriously injured in drag race crash
A 45-year-old woman is in critical condition and doctors anticipate amputating her right leg after she was injured in a hit-and-run crash involving two cars that were racing on a South Philadelphia street early Sunday morning.
The incident occurred at around 12:08 a.m. on 3rd Street between Packer and Pattison avenues, authorities said, and it was caught on cellphone video.
Two cars, a white 2019 Dodge Charger SRT and a dark-colored Dodge Charger, were involved in a drag race surrounded by a large crowd when the driver of the white Charger lost control and swerved into a group of onlookers.
Three men hopped out of the car and fled the scene on foot, and an unmarked tow truck later removed the white Charger, authorities said.
The woman was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for treatment.
Investigators are looking for both cars involved in the race. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Accident Investigation Unit at 215-685-3180/3181.
Lector punched during Mass at Cathedral
A 40-year-old woman was punched by another woman while serving at a Mass Sunday morning at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Center City.
The strange incident occurred during the 11 a.m. service and was caught on cameras as the Mass was live-streamed.
The woman, who was serving as a lector, or reader, was leaving the sanctuary area when the attacker hit her twice in the face.
Archdiocese of Philadelphia spokesman Ken Gavin said the woman was helped immediately by cathedral staff members and is doing well. She did not require medical attention, he said.
The attacker left the church after the incident.
It’s unclear what, if anything, provoked the assault. Gavin said the lector did not know the woman. Police said they had no information on a possible motive.
Archbishop Nelson Perez, in a statement on his Facebook page, called the attack a “senseless act of aggression.”
“Such behavior is unacceptable at all times, especially within the confines of a church building and during the celebration of the Holy Mass,” he wrote. “Violence has no place in our world and every life is a precious gift from God.”
Detectives continue to look for the suspect, who authorities describe as a 5-foot 8-inch Black woman with a heavy build. She was wearing a green tracksuit and mask, police said.
