Some Dems pledge to avoid Philly airport for convention travel during strike

Some Democratic delegates reportedly said they will fly into other airports to avoid crossing potential picket lines at the Philadelphia International Airport during the party’s convention this month.

“I am a newly elected member to the DNC from California and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Philly and will be flying into New York City and driving into Philadelphia so as not to cross a picket line,” delegate Susie Shannon wrote in an email, according to Philly.com.

Former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich and other delegates also signed a petition supporting the workers, the report read.

Hundreds of the airport’s employees voted Tuesday to walk off their jobs during the event, scheduled for July 25 through 28. The employees include security officers, cabin cleaners and baggage handlers.

Service Employees International Union 32BJ is attempting to organize the workers.
