State holds online auction of items seized at airports

Ever wonder what happened to the sweet pocketknife that you forgot was in your pocket at the airport and had to give up before boarding the plane? Or the pair of $200 sunglasses you accidentally left in the plastic bin at the luggage scanner?

You might soon see them online.

The state Department of General Services began auctioning off items seized by the Transportation Security Administration or left behind by passengers at airports in the Mid-Atlantic region Monday.

The state agency has made $700,000 from such sales since 2004, according to a report from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Items, available by searching “PA state surplus” at GovDeals.com, will be posted each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The merchandise was previously available only at the State Surplus Store in Harrisburg.

For sale today are upwards of 19 pounds of pocket knives, 18 pounds of belts, 15 pounds of plastic handled scissors, 12 pairs of Ray-Ban sunglasses and a compact wood golf putter.

The Delaware River Port Authority, which also posts items on the site, is auctioning off 11 Xerox copiers and two fax machines.
