A driver fled the scene after killing a pedestrian Monday night at Broad Street and Oregon Avenue, the second fatal hit-and-run crash to occur in South Philadelphia since Saturday.
Investigators said someone behind the wheel of a light-colored SUV was speeding west on Oregon when they ignored a steady red light at Broad. The vehicle struck a woman, described as being between 40 and 50 years old, as she was crossing Oregon, according to law enforcement officials.
Medics took the victim, whose name has not been released, to Jefferson University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, authorities said. Police told reporters at the scene that she was knocked out of her shoes and found 100 feet away from the point of impact.
The driver did not stop and continued west on Oregon, according to the PPD. Officials said the SUV may have a Pennsylvania license plate that includes the letters “MLK.” Anyone with information is asked to contact the department’s Crash Investigation Division at 215-685-3180 or call or text the police tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477).
Almost exactly 48 hours earlier, on Saturday night, a van driver ran away on foot after colliding with an unoccupied vehicle in a crash that killed 75-year-old John McDermott, who was standing in the parking lane on the 1100 block of S. 11th Street, also in South Philadelphia, authorities said.
