American football kicked off at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England, as the Philadelphia Eagles battled the Jacksonville Jaguars on a perfect Sunday afternoon in the United Kingdom. It looked like the Birds were poised to fly back to the USA with a win, but a defensive lapse by the special teams unit allowed Jacksonville to steal a 19-17 win in the contest’s final moments on a game-winning field goal from Cam Little.
Jacksonville rookie Josh Cameron took the opening kickoff 92 yards downfield into the painted turf for an early score, but the play was wiped off the board for offsetting penalties. In a nod to English football, typically played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, officials metaphorically issued red cards to Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Jaguars receiver Brian Thomas Jr. for unsportsmanlike conduct, resulting in ejections for both players before a snap was taken in the international showcase.
After a punt put the ball in the Eagles' hands, Will Shipley was stopped short of the first down, returning the ball to Jacksonville near midfield. Three plays later, the Jaguars celebrated a 51-yard touchdown strike to Parker Washington for the opening score, 7-0, after a successful PAT.
The Eagles' offense finally found some rhythm in the second quarter, with sizable gains on passes to Dallas Goedert and Dontayvion Wicks, methodically moving the ball downfield. The pressure on the Jaguars' defense ultimately led to a pass interference penalty against Travis Hunter inside the five-yard line. Shipley celebrated the game-tying touchdown on a two-yard dash, while Jake Elliott tied the game at seven.
Jalen Carter disrupted the next drive, causing a forced fumble on a 10-yard strip sack, but the ball was recovered by the team in teal. An incomplete pass on third brought the Jags’ punt unit back on the field to hand the ball back to Philadelphia.
Three plays later, Jalen Hurts threw a perfect dart to Darius Cooper for a 62-yard touchdown strike, giving the Eagles their first lead of the day at 13–7. Elliott tacked on the PAT for the seven-point advantage at 14-7.
Jacksonville responded with a long, stress-inducing 23-play, 68-yard march downfield over the last 5:31 of the half. Inexplicably, the Jaguars called multiple plays in shotgun formation from the Eagles' one-yard line, which were shut down by Birds defenders. Jacksonville tried to get cutesy on an end-around to punch the ball in the end zone, but Zach Baun met Bhayshul Tuten six yards in the backfield to deny the threat. Eagles supporters around the world breathed a sigh of relief with the team in Midnight Green holding a one-score halftime advantage (still 14-7).
Philadelphia wasted the second-half kickoff after gaining seven yards on the opening drive, following a botched third-down snap that was initially ruled a fumble but was overturned to an incomplete pass to Dameon Pierce. The Eagles punted the pigskin away to pin the Jaguars inside their own 20-yard line.
As they did to end the second quarter, Jacksonville marched down the field on a 14-play, 81-yard drive that ended in a field goal from Little to trim the Eagles' lead to 14-10.
Hurts navigated an all-out pressure attack from the Jacksonville defense to link up with Wicks for a 19-yard first down ot move the ball towards the red, white, and blue logo painted at midfield. A 10-yard holding penalty on the Jaguars defense placed the ball in the middle of that logo as the Eagles continued their march down the field. Hurts lined up the Eagles for a 4th-and-3, but Hunter broke up a pass intended for Makai Lemon, handing the ball back to his offense.
Quinyon Mitchell picked off a long-range toss for his first official takeaway in the regular season, despite having four interceptions in postseason play for the Birds. Unfortunately, Hurts was unable to sustain a drive against Jaguars pressure. He nearly connected with Wicks on a long downfield strike, but the ball fell just in front of the outstretched fingertips of the first-year Eagles wideout.
The Eagles defense was tested again as the Jacksonville run game continued to eat up yards as the clock ticked into fourth-quarter action. The Jaguars called an unsuccessful shot play to Washington before Baun smothered Lawrence on a third-down snap, forcing an incomplete pass and another punt.
Flying yellow flags killed the Eagles on the following drive after a false start on Jordan Mailata backed the offensive squad even further towards their own end zone, while a hold on Cooper negated a 17-yard catch by Goedert after the zebras detected the illegal pick play.
Just like the Eagles' offense, the Jaguars shot themselves in the cleat with a holding penalty followed by a false start, setting up a 2nd-and-18 with 11 minutes left in regulation. Lawrence wiggled out of the situation on a 14-yard pass to Washington before picking up the first down with his own legs. Another quick strike downfield put the football's nose on the 1-yard line, but a holding call and a false start caused additional problems for the Jaguars' drive. But as they did to end the first half, the Eagles defense stood tall to stop the Jags on fourth down inside the red zone.
The Eagles offense was unable to move the ball after the change of possession, giving Jacksonville another chance from the oversized NFL logo near the 50-yard stripe. Washington secured a magnificent catch on a 27-yard pass, finally breaking through the Eagles' defense to take a 16-14 lead. A high snap led to a missed PAT, leaving the door slightly ajar for the Eagles' offense with the clock winding down.
Once again, the Eagles' offense wasted their chance and handed the ball back to their opponent following their third consecutive possession without a first down. Jacksonville was equally inept with their possession as the defense forced the stop they needed to give Hurts one more chance to steal a win inside the two-minute warning.
The MVP of Super Bowl LIX stepped up with a 10-yard strike to Wicks, a 17-yard completion to Goedert, and a 7-yard link-up with Lemon to give kicker Jake Elliott a chance to win the contest with one swift swipe of his foot. The longtime Birds kicker calmly stepped up and booted a 48-yard field goal to give the Birds a 17-16 lead with only seven seconds left in regulation. It was the Eagles' first second-half points in the last three weeks, and it couldn’t have come at a more clutch time.
Unfortunately, the special teams unit was the weak link today after allowing Amir Abdullah to return the kickoff 53 yards, giving Jacksonville one more opportunity to steal the win. Little drilled a 57-yard field goal to correct his earlier missed PAT and steal the victory with the final three points in a 19-17 final.
Another incomprehensible last-second loss will leave Eagles fans questioning their sanity for a second week in a row as Philadelphia falls to 2-3 on the 2026 campaign.
The list of walking wounded flying back to Philadelphia grew after Shipley, Jalyx Hunt, and Michael Carter II were all ruled out at some point during the three-hour gridiron clash in England. With the Eagles' bye week not until Week 10, Philly will need to massage the roster and win ballgames to keep pace with the New York Giants (3-1 at the time of publication) at the top of the NFC East.
Philadelphia hosts the Carolina Panthers for an NFC contest next Sunday at 1 pm at Lincoln Financial Field, where the Birds will look to restore their record back to the .500 mark this season.
