Day 10 of training camp is in the books as the Philadelphia Eagles continue to prepare for the upcoming season and their first preseason game this Saturday, when they head down I-95 to take on the Baltimore Ravens.
There were some positives to start the day as wide receivers Makai Lemon and DeVonta Smith made limited returns, while several players turned in noteworthy performances.
Here are the biggest observations from the practice session:
The two wideouts have missed the last few days of practice nursing hamstring injuries. Rookie Makai Lemon was seen on the field with his helmet in hand and was working on the JUGS machine while DeVonta Smith was working out on the field.
Neither participated in team drills, but it’s a step in the right direction for the two receivers, especially Lemon, who is trying to learn the playbook and nuances of being an NFL wide receiver.
Despite the missed time, the rookie is still slated to be one of the three starting wide receivers, according to the team’s unofficial depth chart. Jalen Hurts discussed Lemon, saying he's not worried about the first-year wideout.
"He's been engaging himself," Hurts said after practice.
"He's doing the same thing Smitty is doing and being right there in the huddle. He might not be getting the reps, but am I in the huddle? Am I still getting that same vibe as if I'm still playing? I think it's all in the preparation. Coach [Lincoln] Riley always said nothing but great things about Makai and how intense he is with the walkthroughs."
The biggest play of the day was a deep touchdown pass between Jalen Hurts and Elijah Moore.
The wideout has had a nice couple of days getting more reps with Lemon and Smith missing practice over the last few days. The veteran receiver spent last season with Denver and Buffalo, but only appeared in nine games with the Bills, making nine catches for 112 yards and no touchdowns.
The former second-round pick looks to make the 53-man roster to round out a deep wide receiver room.
Quinyon Mitchell suffered an apparent injury during a 1-on-1 against Hollywood Brown, per NBC Sports Philadelphia's Dave Zangaro.
Zangaro later reported that Mitchell was being stretched out by trainers and did not return to the field for the team's 7-on-7's.
The unofficial depth chart was released on Tuesday, and while a lot can change, it gives fans a glimpse as to where the coaching staff sees the players fit on the depth chart with injuries and performance.
Of note, Cooper DeJean is listed as both the starting nickel cornerback and safety, with Michael Carter II sharing the second-string spot with Marcus Epps.
With the injured Jonathan Greenard expected to miss more time, Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt are listed as the two starting EDGE rushers with Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Epenesa as the backups.
Expect that depth chart to change multiple times leading up to the season opener, but it certainly will be a topic of discussion as each new iteration is released.
