After a search led by Bob Myers, Philadelphia is reportedly set to hire Cavaliers executive Mike Gansey to oversee basketball operations as the franchise enters a pivotal offseason.

The Sixers are set to name Mike Gansey, general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers, as their new President of Basketball Operations, according to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania.

After parting ways with Daryl Morey, Philadelphia began a search for his replacement under Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment’s President of Sports Bob Myers, who will continue to oversee the team, as Gansey operates as the day-to-day leader of the front office.

In his search, Myers identified a number of primary candidates, including Minnesota Timberwolves GM Matt Lloyd and internal candidate and Philly native, Jameer Nelson. After meeting with candidates earlier this week, Myers and the Sixers landed on Gansey, who leaves Cleveland after nearly a decade and a half, overseeing the team’s G League affiliate, the Charge, beginning in 2012. He was promoted to assistant general manager in 2017 before being elevated to general manager in 2022.

Gansey will now have his first crack at running an NBA front office after serving under Cleveland’s general manager, turned president of basketball operations, Koby Altman. While Myers is expected to remain involved in the major decision-making, Gansey, as the day-to-day leader, will handle the moves along the margins for Philadelphia, which aligns with his role under Atlman in Cleveland.

While the Cavaliers made some major moves during his time as general manager, including the trades for Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, those have largely been credited to Altman, while Gansey has received praise for his role in the drafting of Jaylon Tyson and the team identifying undrafted talents Dean Wade and  Craig Porter Jr. and most recently Nae'Qwan Tomlin. According to Kevin O'Connor of Yahoo! Sports, Gansey also played an important role in Cleveland acquiring sharpshooters Sam Merrill and Max Strus.

With Gansey now penciled in as the day-to-day front office leader, the Sixers can return to focusing their efforts on the major decisions to be made with the roster this offseason, beginning with the 2026 NBA Draft.

Regarding Sixers current general manager, Elton Brand and Nelson, the team’s assistant general manager, there has yet to be a decision officially made at this time. It’s worth noting that NBA insider Marc Stein reported that there is “growing expectation” around the league that, should he not be named the team’s president of basketball operations, Nelson could be elevated into the team’s general manager role with Elton Brand potentially moving into a new role within the organization.

For now, Gansey and Myers will work together as the Sixers face yet another uncertain offseason. The top of the new-look front office is now in place, but there remains much work to be done as the Sixers look to build around Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, while contemplating the futures of Joel Embiid and Paul George.
