Bicycle commuting northbound into Center City increased 10 percent since 2010, according to a new study from Center City District.
The study, conducted during the first two weeks of October, showed an average of 873 cyclists entered downtown on northbound routes between Third and 22nd streets between 8 and 9 a.m., compared to 790 during the same hours in 2010. The rise was attributed to the population growth of young adults, the addition of bike lanes and rising gas prices.
The two streets that experienced the highest volume were 22nd and 13th streets – the only two streets with dedicated bike lanes.
The special services district believes the numbers will continue to increase with more dedicated bike lanes. A new Bicycle and Pedestrian plan from the city Planning Commission calls for 117 miles of new bike lanes citywide.
