Suspect charged in fatal Center City beating

A 59-year-old man has been charged in connection with the beating death of a homeless man Tuesday morning outside the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Center City.

Officers found Johnathan Muldrow, 49, while checking on a group of homeless people on the 100 block of N. 13th Street. He was unresponsive and had suffered head trauma, police said, and investigators recovered a pipe nearby.

Surveillance video indicates the attack occurred just after 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to authorities.

Juan Guerra, who is also homeless, was arrested Wednesday on the 1200 block of Market Street, police said, and charged with murder and possession of an instrument of crime with intent.

Muldrow was among three people killed Tuesday in Philadelphia.

A 19-year-old man died after being shot in the head and multiple times throughout his body just after 1 p.m. on the 1200 block of Wagner Avenue in Logan, authorities said.

Less than an hour later, just after 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, a 29-year-old man was shot once in the chest on the 2500 block of S. 66th Street in the Elmwood section of Southwest Philadelphia, according to police.

Officers rushed him to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

Three others were wounded in overnight shootings Tuesday into Wednesday.

In Feltonville, SEPTA transit officers took a 29-year-old man to the hospital after he was shot twice in the back just before 6 a.m. Wednesday on the 4700 block of D Street, police said. He was later listed in stable condition.

Authorities said a 32-year-old man was shot four times — once in the chest, twice in the neck and once in the stomach — at around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday inside a house on the 4900 block of N. 13th Street in Logan.

He was taken to Einstein Medical Center in critical condition, police said, and there have been no arrests.

Earlier, at around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, a 27-year-old man was shot twice in the chest, twice in the thigh and once in the stomach on the 2600 block of N. 7th Street in the Fairhill neighborhood, investigators said.

He was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
