Eagles HC Nick Sirianni wants QB competition

First-year Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni isn’t just going to hand over his team’s starting quarterback job to second-year passer, Jalen Hurts, who sparked a dead offense down the stretch momentarily during one of Philadelphia’s worst seasons in two decades.

Speaking on Wednesday, Sirianni would not go on record naming a starting quarterback.

“To name any starters at this particular time, we’ve been working with these guys for two days,” Sirianni said. “My biggest thing is competition. We’ve talked a little bit about my core values, [and] it’s my second core value, it’s this team’s second core value. Competition is a huge thing, and we’re going to have competition at every position.”

Such a quote lends some light on what the Eagles might be doing at the 2021 NFL Draft next week with the No. 12 pick.

As it stands, the only quarterback on the depth chart other than Hurts is veteran Joe Flacco, whose better days are well behind him, as seen during his back-up and relief stint with the lowly New York Jets last season.

Granted, moving down in the draft from the No. 6 pick, which they did in a trade with the Miami Dolphins, could see them lose out on a better quarterbacking talent. Ohio State’s Justin Fields, Alabama’s Mac Jones, and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance all could have been available at No. 6.

At No. 12, it’s a bit riskier, though there is no confirmation they would go down such an avenue.

“Like we talked about when we had our last media opportunity, we’re going to evaluate every player, and nothing is off the table,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman added.
