Time to disown Nails?

How low can Lenny Dykstra go? How about suddenly backing out of a scheduled appearance at a Bucks County mall this weekend to instead fight fellow baseball lowlife Jose Canseco in a “celebrity” boxing match the same day?

It’s safe to assume the boxing match in Los Angeles this Saturday night will pay a bit more than the autograph session previously planned at Oxford Valley Mall in Middletown.

But the timing of the cancellation was intriguing. Yesterday morning, a publicity official for the mall sent out an e-mail saying “Nails” would appear along with other former sports players like Mitch Williams. A couple hours later, reports of his fight with Canseco came out.

“Dykstra was booked by his agent for a celebrity-boxing match against Jose Canseco in Hollywood on Saturday night and is now unable to attend,” mall spokeswoman Jennifer Sherlock said in a statement after Dykstra cancelled, adding that “although Lenny Dykstra will not be in attendance, there are still many players who will be signing autographs.”

Dykstra, 48, last month pleaded no contest in California to three counts of grand theft auto, which could mean up to four years in jail when he’s sentenced in January.

Other charges

The disgraced ballplayer who became a star with the Phillies for his gritty play and won a World

Series with the New York Mets in 1986 still faces charges in two other cases, including allegedly exposing himself to multiple women.
