VIDEO: Man shot during robbery at North Phila. station on SEPTA’s Broad Street Subway

Police are investigating a shooting at a SEPTA Broad Street Line subway station last night.

Investigators said that officers responded to the North Philadelphia station at North Broad Street and Glenwood Avenue at 7:40 p.m. There, they found a 53-year-old man from the Allegheny West section of North Philadelphia who had been shot in the hip.

Police said the victim told them that he had exited the train and was walking from the northbound subway platform when a man, who he believes had been riding the same train, walked in front of him. He said that as he was attempting to leave the concourse, the man walked up the subway stairs, drew a handgun and quickly turned around to face him, saying, “Give it up.”

The victim turned around and attempted to run back toward the subway platform when the suspect fired once, shooting him. As the victim collapsed, he said the man again demanded money. He then gave the suspect his wallet containing $280 and his credit cards. He is in stable condition at Temple University Hospital.

SEPTA patrol officers inside the station, who heard the gunshot, pursued the robber on foot, but lost sight of him near the 2700 block of North 15th Street, investigators said. The man is described as a six-foot-tall, thin black male of about 30 years old wearing a light blue hoodie, blue jeans and sneakers.

The shooting was one of several recent outbreaks of violence inside SEPTA stations or vehicles. A man was stabbed during an attempted robbery on the Market-Frankford el City Hall platform early yesterday morning. A 14-year-old was hospitalized on Friday afternoon after he was attacked by six teens on the Route 52 bus on North 54th Street near West Berks Street in Wynnefield.

And less than three weeks ago, a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old were shot on a Broad Street Line train near the Susquehanna-Dauphin station as a result of an alleged school rivalry. A 15-year-old was charged as an adult for that incident, but no arrests have yet been made in last night’s shooting, or in the other two attacks.
