Villanova alum says 2016 title might just be better than 1985

Bryn Mawr’sJohn McGee was in Kentucky when the 1985 Villanova Wildcats upset Georgetown for their first National Championship.

He was at The Pavilion when the 2016 squad won its second title, upsetting North Carolina on a Kris Jenkins buzzer-beater. And though hewasn’t in Houston, he was with his son William. What a father-son moment.

Especially sincehe was wearing his lucky charm around his neck.

“These are my ticket stubs for the 1985 game which was the greatest day of my life,” McGee said minutes after the 77-74 Villanova win, showing off the pieces of paper that got him into the National Championship game 31 years ago.”This might have surpassed that.”

As McGee and his son walked onto campus and saw the celebration pour into the streets, he had a deja vu moment.

“I was in Kentucky for that game,” he said. “What people described in 1985 is what is happening on campus, it was very much like that.”

The magnitude of what happened Monday night is not lost on current students either.

“This has literally been history in the making,” Villanova seniorNariman Amin said.”People look back at the 85 kids and say ‘they made history’ and now I get to be part of that history in 2016.”

For Nova’s recruiters it was a perfect night. Just ask high school junior William McGee.

“That was absolutely amazing,” he said, noting that he was strongly considering attending Nova a year and a half from now.
