The Titans released Vince Young Thursday after five seasons. Earlier in the week, it was reported that they had agreed to terms with Matt Hasselbeck.
What does this mean for the Eagles? Well, it was long thought that the Titans were shopping Young as part of a trade. By releasing him outright, a team can sign him without giving anything up.
The Eagles should be on the phone RIGHT NOW — with Young’s agent.
Andy Reid needs a backup quarterback for injury-prone starter Michael Vick. Young is talented, albeit immature, but very talented. He also fits with the reform movement going on in South Philadelphia. He’s had some off-the-field issues, needs to become a better passer, study his playbook a little harder — basically all the same things that were wrong with Vick before he landed with the Eagles.
ESPN’s NFL Insider Adam Schefter has already put it out there that Young is interested in coming to Philadelphia. He is intrigued about the idea of working with Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.
And so has Vick, who referred to Young as “his man.”
“I don’t know how true it is [the rumors], but I think it would be a great opportunity for Vince to come in and learn. We’ll see.”
We will see. Until then — with Kevin Kolb gone — the backup job belongs to Mike Kafka.
