Wanted: a few good horses

If anyone has any spare horses lying around, state troopers in Pennsylvania might be able to take them off your hands.

The Pennsylvania State Police is looking for donations of horses to assist in searches, crowd control and operations in remote areas. Eligible equines be between 5 and 15 years old, have a quiet disposition and stand between 5-feet, 4-inches and 6-feet at the shoulder.

Thoroughbreds need not apply — they tend to be too hot-blooded, state police say.

State troopers occasionally solicit donations for its 26-horse mounted patrol unit. The animals are housed in stables at the state police academy in Hershey, but are used across the state.

The agency accepts donations on a 90-day trial basis to determine their suitability for police work.
