Anyone who walks the way of the weed will tell you that April 20 is a special time for celebration. And 4:20 – the national holiday for all things cannabis culture and in a marijuana mood – is upon us.

Whether in Philadelphia, or readily available by mail, there are a small but steady slew of 4:20 events or weed worthy enterprises in which to imbibe and appreciate.

Helium presents: Weeding Out the Stoned

This annual 4:20 event at Sansom Street’s Helium Comedy Club is a must for those regular pot smokers who swear that the things that they say, when high, are both profound and hilarious only to find out later that… well…. maybe not.

More of a game show that doubles for a sobriety test than your usual Helium stand-up show, Weeding Out The Stoned features a handful of comedians telling jokes, wherein one of the comics are stoned. Host and “Officer” Alex Grubard will administer in-club field sobriety tests and play mind games with Philly’s most wasted comedians, and the audience has to guess which comedian is higher than they are. (And for the record, Grubard’s event, since its debut in 2015, has been played across the country, and now has a regular Friday time slot at AsylumNYC in Manhattan, and has worked in tandem with local and national chapters of NORML to “end cannabis prohibition by making the war on drugs look ridiculous.”

Dad Grass X the All Things Must Grass collection: Special Blend George Harrison Dad Grass Five Pack

This is the best of many mystical and musical worlds combined. The Los Angeles-based cannabis brand Dad Grass just hooked up a collaboration with the Quiet Beatle, George Harrison, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his epic 3-LP solo debut, ‘All Things Must Pass,’ with a federally legal pre-rolled mix of organic CBD + CBG hemp flower joints, paraphernalia and merchandise collection, All Things Must Pass. After our time spent with Peter Jackson’s Hulu/Disney+ streaming doc, ‘Get Back’, a joint with George would be really nice right about now.

While Dad Grass’ legend states that they’re honoring the late Beatle and celebrating the 50th birthday of his masterpiece “by rolling up light-hearted and laid-back cannabis products… a peaceful balance of the two most enlightening cannabinoids, CBD for physical harmony and CBG for mental clarity, serves as an ode to George’s mystic blend of cultures, styles and times,” I say the Dad Grass collection’s schmoke plays into the music of ‘All Things Must Pass’ elegantly. Especially when you consider that the pre-roll’s rolling papers feature his lyrics printed inside of each joint to its playful re-imaginings of certain song titles within the album themed packaging.

Cognitive at MilkBoy

See, I’m going to take a wild stab at something here, and imagine that the decade-old Jobbstown, New Jersey death metal/Stoner Deathcore ensemble playing at the 1100 Chestnut Street MilkBoy with Replicant, Hath & Existentia on its 4:20 bill is more stoner sludge than doom and death. I was high when I last saw them, and they same across as equally weeded-up, so I’ll stick to that story.

Young Thug’s Young Stoner Life Records presents International Stoners Association: 420 Online Experience.

Rapper and hip hop fashionista Young Thug’s YSL Records isn’t just a home to top charting albums such as Young Thug’s Punk, Gunna’s DS4EVER, and the YSL compilation Slime Language 2. YSL has been crafting a heated weed/immersive hybrid event celebrating cannabis, streetwear, and hip-hop culture for a minute. Along with this year’s 420 Online Experience hosting exclusive video gigs by YSL labelmates and 300 Entertainment artists, including Lil Keed, Yak Gotti, Tooley, OMB Peezy, B Slime, FN DaDealer, T-Shyne, and No Savage, there will be re-imagined retro arcade games, NFTs, and limited-edition physical merchandise for your imaginary pleasure.

Hook & Master Pizza Restaurant X SNACKTIME

Jose Garces’ still new-ish N Second Street pizza world and seafood small plate joint with the tiki cocktails and the nautical theme is already trippy to begin with. On 4:20, however, Garces & Co. will connect with the portable live party and boozy beverage experience, SNACKTIME, for something even more vivid than their usual. Together, the members of this collab are planning the ultimate 4:20 party meets stoner happy hour starting at 5 p.m., with unlimited food until 8:30 p.m., drink tix, cash bars and cocktail specials until 10 p.m., and three, brassy, elongated SNACKTIME sets for funky flavor.
