At least nine people were shot over the weekend in Philadelphia, including a man who was gunned down Saturday evening in West Philadelphia.
Police said the 25-year-old was shot once in the head just before 6 p.m. on the 600 block of N. 34th Street in the Mantua neighborhood. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he died a short time later.
There have been 96 people murdered in the city this year, up 30% compared to this time in 2020, when Philadelphia experienced a near-record 499 homicides.
After 16-year-old Kahree Simmons was fatally shot last week outside a West Philadelphia recreation center, Mayor Jim Kenney said that his administration will begin holding regular public briefings, starting this Wednesday, on efforts to address gun violence.
In Bridesburg, a man in his mid-to-late 20s was shot in the back of the head just before 2:15 p.m. Sunday on the 4500 block of Richmond Street. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital and listed in critical condition, authorities said.
A 42-year-old man was found dead early Sunday morning in what police have characterized as a “suspicious death.”
He was unresponsive when a family member discovered him in bed at around 3:30 a.m. inside a house on the 600 block of N. 51st Street in the Mill Creek section of West Philadelphia. The man had visible injuries to his face, authorities said.
Investigators said a 30-year-old man was shot during a robbery at around 12:30 a.m. Sunday on the 400 block of South Street in Queen Village. The suspects took his wallet and jacket and fled the scene.
The victim was taken to Pennsylvania Hospital with a gunshot wound to his right foot, according to police.
At around the same time, in Kensington, a 37-year-old man was shot in the right thigh and foot on the 700 block of E. Clearfield Street, authorities said. He was later listed in stable condition at Temple University Hospital.
Two men were hospitalized after shots rang out at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday on the 4800 block of Tackawanna Street in the Lower Northeast.
A 19-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and right elbow, and a 45-year-old man sustained three wounds to his right leg. Both are expected to survive, according to police.
At around 6 p.m. Saturday, a 21-year-old man was shot once in the upper leg on the 3000 block of N. 9th Street in North Philadelphia, authorities said. He was transported to Temple University Hospital in stable condition.
Officers apprehended a suspect at the scene.
Also in North Philadelphia, a 30-year-old man was shot multiple times at around 5 a.m. Saturday on the 3300 block of N. Front Street. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital and is expected to physically recover.
Investigators said a man is being interrogated in connection with the shooting and a gun was recovered in the area.
Police said a 28-year-old man was shot in the lower leg just after 12:30 a.m. Saturday on the 5500 block of Cherry Street in West Philadelphia. He was taken to Mercy Catholic Medical Center in stable condition.
