Weekend shootings leave 2 dead, 9 injured

Gunfire killed two people and injured nine others in separate shootings over a period of about 10 hours Saturday into Sunday in Philadelphia, authorities said.

The violence claimed the life of a 62-year-old man who was shot three times in the chest just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday outside on the 900 block of E. Cayuga Street in Juniata.

Investigators said a suspect was arrested, and officers on the scene recovered a gun. The motive in the shooting was not immediately clear.

A 28-year-old man was shot in the chest, neck and leg just before 10 p.m. Saturday on the 5200 block of Frankford Avenue, near SEPTA’s typically-busy Frankford Transportation Center, police said.

He was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he died a short time later. One person was apprehended, though authorities did not release further information.

Around the corner, on the 1700 block of Bridge Street, also in Frankford, a 22-year-old woman was shot in the lower leg at around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. She was hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

Authorities said a baby was inside a car when a gunman opened fire Saturday night, shooting a man and woman inside the vehicle.

The incident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. on the 2600 block of N. 27th Street in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood, according to police.

Several shots were fired through the driver’s side window, striking the 1-year-old child’s mother, a 21-year-old woman, in the right arm. A 20-year-old man was shot in the neck, and the baby was not injured.

They tried to drive to the hospital but stopped near the corner of 25th Street and Indiana Avenue and called police. Both of the victims were later listed in stable condition, police said.

Two people were also wounded when shots were fired at around 12:10 a.m. Sunday on the 300 block of South Street in Center City.

Police said a 33-year-old man was shot in the right shoulder and a 20-year-old man was hit in the left arm. The elder victim was transported to Jefferson University Hospital, and his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

There was no word on the 20-year-old’s condition. He was dropped off at Jefferson Frankford Hospital, according to police.

A 39-year-old man was shot once in the chest at around 11:45 p.m. Saturday on the 200 block of S. Columbus Boulevard, near Penn’s Landing, authorities said. Officers rushed him to Jefferson University Hospital, where he was in critical condition.

At around the same time, a 27-year-old man was injured in a shooting on the 1000 block of Benner Street, in the Philadelphia Housing Authority’s Oxford Village development in Northeast Philadelphia.

He was hospitalized with a wound to his right arm and is expected to physically recover.

Police said a 19-year-old woman was shot in the stomach at Schwartz Playground on 10th Street in North Philadelphia just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Her injuries are not expected to be life-threatening

Earlier on Saturday, at around 2:15 p.m., someone shot a 19-year-old man in the right thigh on the 1000 block of W. Rockland Street in Logan, investigators said. He was hospitalized in stable condition.
