Face painting, balloon animals, tarot card readings — such simple fairground diversions seem to have little in common with the heady stuff of modern dance. But the two will coexist throughout Triumph Brewing Company tonight at Nichole Canuso Dance Co.’s carnival-themed benefit.
Performances will take place throughout the two-floor restaurant, in the midst of the carnival games and attractions and a “Magic Photo Booth” manned by Philly photographer extraordinaire JJ Tiziou. Those who opt for a VIP ticket will also get a glimpse at the company’s latest piece, “TAKES,” in which Canuso and Pig Iron Theatre’s Dito Van Reigersberg perform inside and are projected onto a 20-by-20-foot cube.
Informal as it may be, the cabaret is a perfect fit for the company. “I’m trying to make my work an invitation more than a declaration,” says Canuso. “It’s really about leaving space for the audience to enter and feel comfortable interpreting the work.”
