Where to celebrate Mardi Gras in Philly

Wondering where to get some delicious Mardi Gras food and drink specials? Keep your wallet and your Tuesday fat at these spots.

City Tap House(3925 Walnut St.): This beer hall in University City will be hosting The Great Abita Donut Tasting with four kinds of donuts and, fittingly, Abita beer. Sink your teeth into the Elvis, a peanut butter donut with bacon and banana cream, or the Brawler, a cake donut with cayenne powdered sugar. Mardi Gras-themed Quizzo will begin at 10 p.m. and Uber will be on location with prizes. Prices are pay as you go.

AtHeadhouse Crab & Oyster Co. (119 South St.), chef Mike Stollenwerk will be cooking up some shrimp gumbo with a house made brown roux ($8) and a po’ boy sampler ($12) with shrimp, oysters, a roast beef sandwich and Zapp’s chips straight from Louisiana. Bartender Katie Loeb will be serving her famous hurricane ($8), made with her own passion fruit syrup, light and dark rum, orange and lime juice, and homemade grenadine.

Chris’ Jazz Cafe(1421 Sansom St.) will be celebrating Mardi Gras with The Hoppin’ John Orchestra ($12 cover charge) as well as classic New Orleans food and drink specials. Think hurricanes, sazeracs and Abita beer specials all night. Everyone will be munching on the Original Crawdad Cheese Steak, crawdad pot pie and classic Mardi Gras treats such as jambalaya and king cake.

Over atRex1516 (1516 South St.), celebrate Mardi Gras like a true Southerner, with chicken and Andouille gumbo with black-eyed peas ($8) and individual king’s cakes with Mardi Gras themed sugars and the traditional plastic baby ($8). Quench your thirst with $7 hurricanes made with aged rum, passion fruit, cranberry, orange and lime juices, as well as $10 sazerac with rye, bitters and raw sugar.

The Twisted Tail (509 S. 2ndSt.) is serving up Fat Tuesday specials including oyster and bacon or crispy rock shrimp po’ boys, crawfish etouffe and beignets with cinnamon sugar. Buckets of Abita will be served and Reverend Chris will play Zydeco jazz piano from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Prices range from $10-19.
