Where to get the best cookies on National Cookie Day

Insomnia, which started as the brainchild of a hungry Penn student, refers to itself as a “late-night bakery concept” — we just call it “that yummy hot cookie place.” Stop in for a fresh, warm S’mores Deluxe or chocolate chunk, or order online and have the cookies show up at your apartment (or your office, if you want everyone to love you). Insomnia delivers until 3 a.m.

• Isgro Pasticceria

1009 Christian St.

Isgro’s has been baking cookies for over a hundred years, so they really have it down — as several Best of Philly awards can attest. These are Italian cookies and biscotti, not your typical gooey chocolate chip. You’re in for treats like pignoli, chocolate-dipped butter cookies, butter walnut mounds, black and whites, and the not-to-be missed ricotta cookies. Pro tip: one Almond Horn will tide both you and your brunch partner over until your table at Sabrina’sis ready across the street.

• Cake and the Beanstalk

Owner Daniel Klein whips up treats right behind the counter at this charming little neighborhood café with charming prices: get five chocolate peanut butter cookies for$2.25, or go for the “old-fashioned” oatmeal raisins, just a buck a piece. Even better, your vegan friend can tag along, without fretting about hipster prices. Three vegan chocolate chip cookies are $2.25.

•The Famous Fourth Street Cookie Company

51 N. 12th St.

There are a lot of sweets to choose from at Reading Terminal Market and while we strongly encourage making it a long-term mission to eat them all, you might be spoiled for others after a thick, chewy chocolate chip cookie from Famous Fourth Street. Feel free to mix it up with a bite of their sugar cookie or a nibble of peanut butter, but you’ll always come back to the classic original.

•Hope’s Cookies

1125 W. Lancaster Ave., Rosemont

Venture up the Main Line to Hope’s for fresh, oversized, homey cookies in both seasonal varietieslike pumpkin (with pumpkin pie puree and caramel) or ginger, or stick with the tried-and-true, like double fudge, sugar with Jimmies on top or Snickerdoodle.
