Wind turbines approved off coast of Atlantic City

New Jersey-based offshore wind developer Fishermen’s Energy received final state approval Friday to build one of the first commercial offshore wind farms in the country, according to reports earlier this weekend.

The six-turbine demonstration project will be constructed 2.8 miles off the coast of Atlantic City, Bloomberg reported, following a yearlong impact study considering its possible effects on avian and marine wildlife. Clocking in at between $250 million and $300 million, the installation will have a generation capacity of up to 25 megawatts, which could power about 10,000 homes.

Fishermen’s Energy still needs to obtain permission from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, choose a vendor, and secure financing before construction can begin.

But the report indicated that the turbines may be in service as early as next year. At less than three miles offshore, the project won’t need the federal approval required with a deepwater project further off the coast.
