A fire turned into a crime scene Sunday night in Brewerytown when authorities found a woman stabbed to death.
The blaze was reported just before 8:30 p.m. on the 2900 block of W. Girard Avenue. After it was under control, firefighters and police found Devin Gold, 27, who lived at the house, with multiple stab wounds.
Medics pronounced her dead at the scene.
A 40-year-old man was also inside the house cutting his wrist, police said. He was transported to Penn Presbyterian Hospital, and there was no word on his condition.
Investigators are treating Gold’s death as a homicide, and no charges had been filed as of Monday morning.
She was one of six people killed Saturday and Sunday in Philadelphia. The city’s homicide total, now at 399, is up 41% compared to this time last year.
Detectives were also investigating Monday after a man was found dead at around 2:15 p.m. with a gunshot wound to his head.
Police said the 44-year-old man was discovered by his aunt in the front bedroom of a house on the 4800 block of Westminster Avenue in the Mill Creek section of West Philadelphia.
Officers did not find a gun at the scene.
ATM explosion rocks West Philly
Someone blew up an ATM outside a bar early Monday morning in West Philadelphia, authorities said.
The explosion, which was reported to police just after 1 a.m., occurred outside Sammy’s Sports Bar on the 5000 block of Market Street.
Officers from the police’s bomb squad were called in, and they found that an accelerant was placed inside the machine. The entire top of the ATM was removed, and the cash box was taken, authorities said.
Investigators were reviewing nearby security cameras to see if the incident was caught on tape.
The city experienced a rash of ATM-related explosions during the unrest that accompanied protests following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police.
Authorities searching for missing men
Police released information Monday about two missing men who were last seen earlier this month in Olney.
Authorities said Jerome Lawrence, 29, rode a SEPTA bus Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 5th Street and Lehigh Avenue to the 5400 block of N. 5th Street to meet with a man who owed him money.
Lawrence’s cousin, 46-year-old Sindell Oliver, planned to meet him on the block to confront the man, according to investigators.
Neither Lawrence nor Oliver has been seen or heard from since.
Police said Lawrence’s girlfriend received text messages indicating that he did arrive on the 5400 block of N. 5th Street.
Family and friends of the men have been trying to gain publicity for their case. Last week, they attempted to disrupt a city press conference in Olney about a new commercial corridor cleaning program.
