Woman who jumped in ocean with baby charged

Prosecutors charged an Atlantic City woman Wednesday with attempted murder for an incident five months ago when she jumped into the ocean while holding her baby.

Patricia Shurig, 24, was allegedly holding her one-month old infant on Oct. 26, 2014 around 5 p.m. when she jumped off a jetty near New Hampshire and Pacific Avenue into the ocean, according to Atlantic County prosecutors.

Coast Guard, first responders and bystanders pulled Shurig and her infant from the water.

They were hospitalized and both survived.

Shurig was previously charged with aggravated assault. Attempted murder charges were filed Wednesday.

No motive for the crime was listed by prosecutors.
