Worry for city’s young victims

NORTH PHILADELPHIA. Two young kids were shot standing outside on a street near Fairhill Park in North Philadelphia early yesterday morning, but the 12-year-old girl and the 13-year-old boy weren’t the youngest victims of gunfire this weekend, police said.

A six-month-old baby girl also suffered a bullet wound in a shooting Saturday night as she and her mother were caught in what a police spokeswoman described as crossfire but neighbors said was a drive by on a bicycle.

All three children remained in hospitals last night in stable condition, police said. No arrests were made in either shooting, police said.

“There was just one shooter. He came by shooting and hit ‘Chocolate Baby.’ I don’t know her name. That’s her nickname we call her,” one neighbor said as she watched her own children playing near the corner of Diamond and North Randolph streets where the shooting happened at 10:30 p.m. “But I could see nothing. It was dark out.”

Just eight blocks north and four hours later, the teenage boy and the girl were each shot twice at about 2:30 a.m., police said. No one on the 2800 block of North Ninth Street yesterday afternoon saw the shooting occur and police said they didn’t have a motive. The girl was shot twice in the abdomen. The boy was shot once in the right shoulder and once in the upper right side, police said.
