Hot and humid on Broad Street

Alene Reta won the 31st annual Broad Street Run yesterday after posting a finishing time of 48 minutes, 10 seconds.

The 28-year-old from New York came in nearly 30 seconds slower than last year’s winner on the men’s side, most likely due to almost 90-degree temperatures. Ketema Nigusse finished second in 48:34. The course record is 45:14, set in 2007 by Patrick Cheruiyot, and is the fastest 10-mile time in U.S. history.

On the women’s side, Buzunesha Deba won after clocking a time of 55:13. Alemtsehay Misganaw was second in a time of 55:22. Kenya’s Catherine Ndereba set the women’s record of 53:07 in 1999.

Thirty thousand runners — a new record for the event — participated in the Broad Street Run, which started near Central High School and ended at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. As always, all proceeds from the run benefitted the American Cancer Society.

Across the state, the finding of a suspicious device halted the Pittsburgh Marathon. Some 5,000 runners took part in the full marathon.
