Xóchitl Gómez has become a big bet for inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A teenage actress with Mexican roots, Gómez plays América Chávez, the central character in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Her character is a young superheroine with dimensional powers, who not only represents the inclusion of Latinos in the MCU but is also the first LGBTQI+ character in the entire saga.
“The MCU has started to better portray America and the world in their movies, you can see the inclusion, and also in this movie, she is an important part of the story. I think the audience, one way or another, will see themselves on screen with my character,” says Gómez.
Gómez has had a permanent smile as the media surrounds “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” the sequel to the film starring award-winning Benedict Cumberbatch.
At 16-years-old, Gómez is little known in the industry but understands that there is great expectation for her debut.
“I never thought I’d be acting in blockbusters,” Gómez says, but adds that she’s proud of her role and the representation it means for Latinos and LGBTQI+ people.
Metro recently spoke with Gómez to learn more.
How do you feel about the challenge of bringing a character like América Chávez to the MCU?
It’s incredible that the MCU has included América Chávez in this film, and with such an important role. It also includes a younger version than in the comics. In this film, America is 14 years old, and she still doesn’t control her powers, so I had to make an adaptation of the character we already know. But there is also a commitment to inclusion, to show the reality of the world, the different faces and expressions. When I passed my first audition, there were many things I hadn’t thought about before. I am responsible for making the character’s decisions and choices clear in everything I do.
Are you overwhelmed by being the new face of the MCU?
I’ve been a big fan of the MCU. I watched all the movies. I love the characters and in this movie, I had the opportunity to work with several of my favorite actors and actresses, including Ben (Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong) and Liz (Olsen)… So it was a dream come true. I still can’t believe it. It’s amazing to see the performances of these great actors, that they keep their characters after so many years and are able to bring something new to it, something fresh in every film.
How was it to work with director Sam Reimi?
Sam Reimi is a legend, he’s a master in the horror genre and to have those horror scenes that we got, where I was doing nothing but screaming was amazing. He is also a very collaborative director, he guides you, he accompanies you, and for a 14-year-old actress to go through that experience is incredible.
How was the experience of working with green screen and special effects?
I had never really used it before, but it’s not that we used it that much. A lot of the scenes we did take place in real settings, and as an actress, it helps me a lot because it’s more natural and believable to have real people and real things that you can touch. When you have monsters chasing you, it’s much easier to imagine them in real settings. It did take me some time to get used to hanging 20 feet in the air and having to act. I had to work on my back muscles and abs because when you have to jump and run and do a lot of wirework, having enough strength is a must.

Xóchitl Gómez se ha convertido en una gran inclusión en el Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel (MCU – por sus siglas en inglés).
Una actriz adolescente con raíces mexicanas, Gómez interpreta a América Chávez, el personaje central de “Doctor Strange en el Multiverso de la Locura”. Su personaje es una joven super heroína con poderes dimensionales, que no solo representa la inclusión de los latinos en el MCU sino que también es el primer personaje LGBTQI+ de toda la saga.
“El MCU ha comenzado a representar mejor a Estados Unidos y al mundo en sus películas, puedes ver la inclusión, y también en esta película, ella es una parte importante de la historia. Creo que la audiencia, de una forma u otra, se verá a sí misma en pantalla con mi personaje”, dice Gómez.
Gómez porta una sonrisa permanente mientras los medios cubren a “Doctor Strange en el Multiverso de la Locura”, la secuela de la película protagonizada por el galardonado Benedict Cumberbatch.
A sus 16 años, Gómez es poco conocida en la industria, pero entiende que hay gran expectativa por su debut.
“Nunca pensé que estaría actuando en éxitos de taquilla”, expresa Gómez, agregando que está orgullosa de su papel y de la representación que significa para los latinos y las personas LGBTQI+.

¿Cómo te sientes ante el reto de traer un personaje como América Chávez al MCU?
Es increíble que el MCU haya incluido a América Chávez en esta película, y con un papel tan importante. También incluye una versión más joven que en los cómics. En esta película América tiene 14 años y aún no controla sus poderes, por lo que tuve que hacer una adaptación del personaje que ya conocemos. Pero también hay una apuesta por la inclusión, por mostrar la realidad del mundo, las diferentes caras y expresiones. Cuando pasé mi primera audición, había muchas cosas en las que no había pensado antes. Soy responsable de dejar claras las decisiones y elecciones del personaje en todo lo que hago.
¿Estás abrumada por ser la nueva cara del MCU?
He sido una gran admiradora del MCU. Vi todas las películas. Me encantan los personajes y en esta película tuve la oportunidad de trabajar con varios de mis actores y actrices favoritos, incluidos Ben (Cumberbatch y Benedict Wong) y Liz (Olsen)… Así que fue un sueño hecho realidad. Todavía no puedo creerlo. Es increíble ver las actuaciones de estos grandes actores, que mantienen sus personajes después de tantos años y son capaces de aportar algo nuevo, algo fresco en cada película.
¿Cómo fue trabajar con el director Sam Reimi?
Sam Reimi es una leyenda, es un maestro en el género de terror y tener esas escenas de terror, donde no hacía nada más que gritar, fue increíble. Además, es un director muy colaborador, te guía, te acompaña, y que una actriz de 14 años pase por esa experiencia es increíble.
¿Cómo fue la experiencia de trabajar con pantalla verde y efectos especiales?
Realmente nunca lo había usado antes, pero no es que lo usáramos tanto. Muchas de las escenas que hicimos tuvieron lugar en escenarios reales y, como actriz, me ayudó mucho porque es más natural y creíble tener personas y cosas reales que puedes tocar. Cuando tienes monstruos persiguiéndote, es mucho más fácil imaginarlos en escenarios reales. Me tomó algún tiempo acostumbrarme a colgar 20 pies en el aire y tener que actuar. Tuve que trabajar los músculos de la espalda y los abdominales porque cuando tienes que saltar, correr y hacer mucho trabajo con cables, es imprescindible tener suficiente fuerza.
