Abortion resources in the Philadelphia area

Despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to reverse Roe v. Wade, abortion remains legal in Pennsylvania until 24 weeks of pregnancy.

There are only 18 abortion clinics in Pennsylvania, though about two dozen other facilities, such as hospitals and other medical centers, offer the procedure, according to a 2017 report from the Guttmacher Institute, an organization that supports abortion access.

State law requires women seeking abortions to receive counseling about alternatives to terminating a pregnancy. That session must occur at least 24 hours before the procedure.

Girls under the age of 18 must have the consent of a parent to get an abortion.

In the Philadelphia region, Planned Parenthood runs a number of clinics, including the Locust Street Surgical Center in Center City, which offers surgical abortions until the 16th week after a patient’s last period.

The organization’s Far Northeast Surgical Center will perform the surgery up to 16 weeks and five days from the start of the pregnancy.

Both sites also offer an abortion pill, or medication abortion, until the 10th week of pregnancy.

Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania also offers surgical abortions until 14 weeks at its sites in Warminster and West Chester. Medical abortions are available at the organization’s Bensalem Medical Center and Norristown Abortion Center.

The Philadelphia Women’s Center, at 777 Appletree Street, near 8th and Arch, provides abortions up until the state’s cutoff.

In New Jersey, the same organization, known as the Women’s Centers, runs a clinic in Cherry Hill that performs the procedure until 25 weeks.

At another affiliated facility, the Delaware County Women’s Center, medical abortions are available.

In addition to dedicated clinics, some of the city’s hospital systems offer abortions and related care.

The Einstein Complex Family Planning Center conducts abortions up until 24 weeks at its main hospital in Logan.

Penn Medicine provides services through its Pregnancy Early Access Center, as does Jefferson Health, which has a family planning division.

Other organizations, including AccessMatters and the Women’s Law Project, both based in Philadelphia, offer abortion-related counseling and help.

The Abortion Liberation Fund of PA provides emergency financial assistance to people seeking abortions, which are not covered by some insurance plans.
