Amtrak to replace 30th Street Station departures board with digital display: Report

If you’re a frequent traveler through Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station, it’s hard to get the clicking sound of its flipping departures board out of your head.

But that sound will soon be a thing of the past as Amtrak is planning on replacing the decades-old board with a digital one, according to Billy Penn.

“The idea is to improve the passenger experience through more dynamic and easier to read information at points throughout the concourse,” spokesman Mike Tolbert said in a statement, according to Billy Penn. “There are also ADA benefits as the audio and visual information will be synchronized.”

There is reportedly no timetable on when the board will be replaced.

Billy Penn estimates that the board has stood at the center of 30th Street Station since the 1970s or 1980s, and says Philadelphia is one of only a few major East Coast cities to still use these Solari boards.

New York’s Penn Station was included among that list, but just moved to digitally upgrade their aging Amtrakdisplay this week.
