Barack Obama to stump for Dems in Philly

Hosanna! Barack Obama is coming back to Philadelphia. The uber-popular former Democratic president will attend a campaign event in Philadelphia on Friday to support local Democrats, and tickets are available to the public.

The campaign event on Sept. 21 in West Fairmount park is being held to support races like those of Gov. Tom Wolf, and U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, both strongly favored to win in races against Trump-backed Republicans.

Obama previously turned up in Philadelphia for the Democratic National Convention and other campaign events on behalf of Hillary Clinton, holding a rally in Eakins Oval.

This time around, he’ll be supporting Wolf in his campaign against state Sen. Scott Wagner. Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey is running for a third term against challenger Lou Barletta. (A fundraiser for Barletta attended by VP Mike Pence was protested by hundreds including women dressed as “handmaids.”) Obama will later on Friday attend a fund-raising event for Sen. Casey in Philadelphia.

Polls and fund-raising indicate Democrats will win both those races, but Pennsylvania, which was instrumental to electing President Trump, remains a heavily contested political battleground state, which Trump once said he “dreams about.”

Donald Trump Jr. will speak at a Pennsylvania Republican Party event in Hershey, Pa., also to be held on Sept. 21.
