The Phillies didn’t want to be left out on the wildest night in recent baseball history. So, while other teams battled for the final playoff spots, the Phils made a little history.
By beating the Braves 4-3 last night in a marathon, 13-inning game in Atlanta, the Phillies chalked up win No. 102. No other team in franchise history has won more than the 2011 edition.
“Second place is never good,” skipper Charlie Manuel said after Tuesday night’s game. “That’s like being second. I want sole possession.”
Not only did his Phillies claim the top spot record-wise, but Manuel himself surpassed Gene Mauch for the franchise record for wins by a Phillies manager.
The winning run came courtesy of Hunter Pence, who singled home Brian Schneider with two outs in the 13th. The run also knocked the Braves out of the playoff picture, following an 8-0 win by the St. Louis Cardinals.
It’s all in the Cards for Phils
The regular season is over. And the playoff picture is finally set.
The Phillies will start their World Series quest Saturday at Citizens Bank Park against the
St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cardinals punched their ticket last night by beating the Houston Astros, 8-0, then watched the Atlanta Braves lose.
The Phillies went 3-6 against St. Louis in the regular season, but the Cards took three out of four from the Phils in South Philadelphia just a few weeks ago. St. Louis outscored the Phils 13-5 in those games.
