Body-slammed teacher prompts Bartram school anti-violence rally

Days after a Vine video surfaced that shows the aftermath of a BartramHigh School student body-slamming a teacher — the third assault on a teacher in a month at the school — education advocates, parents, teachers and students will rally against school violence on Tuesday.

“You can’t change the environment at a school if there aren’t enough adults to enforce the rules and be models for acceptable behavior,” said Jerry Jordan, president of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, who is also expected to rally at Bartram.

Also in attendance will be City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, who in a news release said a “dedicated partnership between students and teachers” is needed.

The rally will be held at 3 p.m. at Bartram High School in Southwest Philadelphia.

Last week’s assault that prompted the rally was posted on social media but has since been taken down. A student allegedly attacked a 68-year-old substitute teacher who had asked him to leave a classroom earlier in the school day. In the video, the substitute teacher is allegedly shown knocked out on a hallway floor.

In October, one teacher was punched in the face and another was struck by a student in separate incidents. In March, a student slammed a teacher into the wall.
