Bolaris: Cecily Tynan takes top honors among Philly’s forecasters

I’ve never really watched any TV weather person on a daily basis. The main reason is because I was in the wacky world of television news from 1987 until it ended rather abruptly in January 2012. During that time, I never watched any other forecaster.

I never wanted to doubt my own forecast. I wanted to lead and not be led by others. It’s called making a forecasting decision — not to be influenced and hoping that all of your hard work leads to an accurate forecast. Most of the time it worked. However when it didn’t, nobody in the world felt as bad as me, knowing I had let everyone down.

This brings me to the best and worst of TV weather talent. I have no clue anymore as the market has changed dramatically and I believe the concept of an accurate forecast is secondary now as many of you now get your forecasts from the Internet. Television weather has lost its mojo. I call it robotic homogenization. It all looks the same to me. I could be wrong or just bitter that I’m sitting on the sidelines. Or perhaps a little of both.

So I went to Twitter and asked you who you thought was the best and the worst. Excluding the votes for me — as I thank you for being your chief unemployed meteorologist — here is how your voting went:

Cecily Tynan from 6ABC won best TV forecaster by a landslide. Twitter user @james_fayleez said “Cecily owns this town” and @mrrandomguy23 tweeted that Tynan is “built like a pornstar but acts like royalty.”

Tied for second was Adam Joseph from 6ABC and Sue Serio from Fox29. @sweetnsourlady tweets “Ilove Sue Serio. @martinbuggy tweets “Adam Joseph. Nuff said.”

Coming in third was Sheena Parveen. “With weather on the net 24/7, I have no need for TV weather. But, Sheena Parveen#guesswhy” tweets @pennspete.

The team of Kathy Orr and Kate Bilo from CBS3 tied for fourth,Hurricane Schwartz from NBC10 a distant fifth.

At the bottom of the pile wereScott Williams of FOX29; right behind him is Chris Sowers from WPVI.

I’m not going to share the tweets as I know they have not been in this market long enough to make an impact. Philly is one tough town, but ya gotta love it.
