Cheering to go, fight, click!

Former Eagles cheerleader Maggie Trush-Hammond conceived of the video, Team Ra-Ras Kicks Breast Cancer, that is the current YouTube darling with over 2 million hits. The video does double duty as a fundraiser for breast cancer.

UnitedHealthcare of Pennsylvania agreed to donate 10 cents “per click” — up to a million clicks — to the Philadelphia affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

After practicing the routines at home all summer long, the cheerleading alumni gathered Sept. 11 on the football field of Central High School to dance. Some of the cheerleaders had traveled from as far away as Scottsdale, Arizona and Plano, Texas.

Trush-Hammond, now a labor-and-delivery nurse at Jefferson Hospital, said, “NFL Alumni Philadelphia Chapter Cheerleaders decided to support breast cancer after our reunion in 2009. … We discovered that 10-12 former cheerleaders had suffered from breast cancer.”

After a group of former cheerleaders walked in the Komen Walk for the Cure last May, they decided to do more and proposed a video. One of the former cheerleaders, Juliette Admana, convinced R&B singer Jay Sean to allow them to use his song “Do You Remember.”

“Cancer actually runs in my family. From bone cancer to breast cancer to bone marrow to retinoblastoma,” Sean said. “I’ve had a fair amount of experience with cancer.”
