Claude Giroux on trade talks: ‘Right now, I’m committed’ to Flyers

Philadelphia Flyers veteran forward Claude Giroux’s future with the only NHL team he’s ever played for has been uncertain given current conditions. But that hasn’t been on his radar up to this point.

Multiple reports have speculated the likes of the Colorado Avalanche or Florida Panthers as potential landing spots for the 34-year-old, who continues to be more than serviceable with 16 goals and 21 assists (37 points) in 45 games.

A deal will would Giroux to go to a contender to compete for that elusive Stanley Cup title, something he hasn’t been able to attain in his 14 professional seasons — a showing of good faith and thanks from general manager Chuck Fletcher.

Giroux, however, revealed on Wednesday that such conversations about a trade with Fletcher have been non-existent.

“I haven’t talked to Chuck yet about any of this,” Giroux said. “I’m sure we will at one point. But right now, I’m committed to this team and start winning some hockey games and keep working as a team here.

“It’s been great for me the last 14 years. They’ve treated me the right way. I’ve had a chance to play with a lot of great players and had great coaches. I feel it’s an honor to have been a Flyer for this long.”

Trade speculation regarding Giroux continues to grow louder and louder with each passing day of Flyers ineptitude. They have lost 16 of their last 18 games and aren’t going anywhere any time soon this season. With a litany of needs up and down the roster, Giroux is their most tradeable asset as a high-talent rental whose contract expires at the end of this season for a contending team to pursue.

“It hasn’t been too fun for a good amount of time here,” Giroux said. “We want to win hockey games, we want to play the right way, it’s just not happening right now.”
