Eagles: 3 storylines to watch

1. Stuck in the middle.

Talk all you want about the Eagles revamped defense, the fact remains that the starting linebackers — at least the ones listed with the ones on the depth chart — are three very big question marks.

Moise Fokou will start at strongside; Jamar Chaney at weakside; and rookie Casey Matthews will call the shots at middle. All will be under intense scrutiny, especially Matthews, who will receive the play calls through helmet headphones and pass them on to his teammates.

2. Young and the restless.

Vince Young has struggled picking up the offense in training camp, but coach Andy Reid confirmed yesterday that he will get the second-team snaps in the second quarter.

While much has been made of Young’s off-the-field baggage and unusual throwing motion, the 28-year-old has had success in this league — he’s 30-17 as a starter in the NFL (30-2 in college) and has won 13 of his last 19 pro starts. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg used the words “bright” and “sharp” when discussing the former Titan. Time to show it.

3. In the line of fire.

Another unknown coming into this “dream” season is the offensive line, a unit that struggled mightily at times last season. While the left side seems pretty secure with Jason Peters and Todd Herremans, keep an eye on the rest.

Jamaal Jackson (center) will see his first action since reinjuring himself in last year’s opener. Danny Watkins (right guard) is making his NFL debut after missing the first week of camp. And newcomer Ryan Harris will be counted on to protect Michael Vick’s blind side, with Winston Justice still ailing. metro
