Fighting cancer with protons

Penn Medicine is at the forefront of cancer research with what they call “science’s most sophisticated weapon against cancer.” Penn Medicine boasts the region’s only Proton Therapy Center, which uses proton therapy as a “more precise form of cancer radiation.” Proton therapy is effective in treating cancers that are difficult to treat with conventional radiation, such as brain, spine, lung and other cancers

Protons are extremely effective at destroying the DNA of cancer cells and preventing them from multiplying. Side-effects, complications and damage to healthy tissue are all greatly reduced with Proton Therapy.

Penn’s Radiation Oncology unit offers patients the “latest and greatest” in radiation therapy while also exploring new cancer treatments through research and clinical trials. With these trials, Penn hopes to push medical science and “increase and enhance” the effectiveness of proton therapy and other cancer treatments.
