State Sen. John Wozniak announced this week that he’ll soon introduce legislation to make texting while driving punishable by a $100 fine. As a secondary offense, it would only be enforced if a driver were pulled over for another violation, much like seat-belt violations.
Similar efforts have died in previous legislative sessions.
The bill would also require the Department of Transportation to compile public information on accident reports involving wireless devices.
“Traffic stops, fines, and penalties would simply push this behavior below the dashboard and it could make the problem worse,” said Wozniak, who represents the Johnstown area. The bill would also require the Department of Transportation to compile public information on accident reports involving wireless devices.
