Philadelphia’s Julia R. Masterman Middle School chess team won the national middle school championship title at the SuperNationals V tournament held in Nashville last weekend.
Masterman won the national championship Sunday.
The Masterman team isAlex Wlezien, Angel Hernandez-Camen, Srisa Changolkar, Nalin Khanna, Shira Moolten, Torin Kuehnle and Alejandro Budejen-Jerez. Their coaches were Stephen Shutt and Greg Shahade.
Alex Wlezien came in second place and Nalin Khanna and Angel Hernandez-Camen tied for 20th place in the individual competition. Also competing for Masterman in the K-9 section were Yuva Gambhir, Hayden Keller, Zachary Kingsley and Manus Narula.
The SuperNationals event is only held every four years.
