Neighborhood guide: Manayunk

Dining and shopping

The name “Manayunk” comes from a Lenni Lenape Indian word that translates roughly to “where we go to drink.” While that was a reference to its gorgeous location on the Schuylkill, the neighborhood lives up to its name by boasting some 30-plus restaurants and bars.

Along with that, Manayunk is home to 50 boutiques and more than 20 home furnishing stores.

“In Manayunk, you have the option to shop, dine and drink all in one area,” says Caitlin Maloney, the marketing and events coordinator at the Manayunk Development Corporation. “Ninety-nine percent of the businesses in Manayunk are independently owned and operated. When you go into a store, you will most likely be talking to the owner.”

This month, Manayunk kicked off First Friday events for the community. Local shop, restaurant and gallery owners will be opening their establishments and welcoming guests to explore what Manayunk has to offer year-round. Pay a visit next time on Nov. 4.

By the water

The Friends of the Manayunk Canal maintain the water-side path, which is popular with both bikers and joggers. If you want to slow it down, visit www.manayunkcanal.org for a downloadable walking tour that highlights wildlife and plants. It also includes a brief history of the area.

Real estate

Looking to spend some serious time in Manayunk? The average listing price for the area is $253,059, while the median sales price is $168,000, according to real estate website Trulia.com. Currently, there are 199 homes for sale, with 85 recently sold.

Halloween in the ’Yunk

For little ones, Manayunk shops and businesses will host day-time trick-or-treating on Oct. 29 from noon to 4 p.m. As for that night, neighborhood mainstay Manayunk Brewery (4120 Main St.) is hosting their annual two-floor “Ghost and Goblins” party.
