No solution yet for Sixers and Danny Granger

Less than a week ago the Sixers seized the national spotlight, just for a day, shrugging their awful record and lackluster play for just one moment as they made a bevy of trades right before last Thursday’s deadline.

Arguably the biggest blockbuster of the day netted the Sixers former Pacer Danny Granger. The price tag was Evan Turner, a No. 2 overall pick, and Lavoy Allen.

It is obvious that Granger is in Philadelphia for a single season before he becomes a free agent. But the question still remains: will he ever play?

“The discussions, the meetings are continuing” Sixers coach Brett Brown said Monday of general manager Sam Hinkie and Granger. “I spoke with [Granger] yesterday.”

The dilemma is, Granger, who has averaged just 8.3 points per game in 29 games this season, wants to play with a contender, clearly not with a team at the bottom of the eastern conference standings.

But Granger could play out his contract in Philadelphia and perhaps impress some possible suitors prior to next the offseason.

The Sixers could also buy out the rest of his $4 million contract to set him free.

If they do that, he is free to pursue a new home. However, there is a deadline. A player must be on an active roster by Saturday in order to be eligible for postseason play.

“I mean, he’s a player and he wants to play,” Brown told reporters. “Just trying to sort out what’s going to be best for both parties is yet to be determined.”
