The Phillies reached the five-run mark for just the ninth time in 44 games Sunday, collecting 13 hits to earn Philly yet another shutout victory after two straight losses to the Braves.
The 5-0 win comes at a good time, with Philadelphia packing for a difficult road trip in Detroit and Chicago next week.
Jared Eickhofftossed seven scoreless, five-hit innings and was given a lead early in the second when a Cameron Rupp homer and Tyler Goeddel triple (he was knocked in by Peter Bourjos) gave the Phils an early 2-0 lead. After a mid-inning RBI groundout, the Phils’ last pair of runs came when Maikel Franco his a two-run single in the sixth.
“The team today did a pretty good job,” Franco told CSNPhilly after the win, lifting the Phils to a 25-19 mark.”We had a lot of energy and went out there to play the right way. Everybody did something for the team.” Aside from the pitcher Eickhoff (who had an RBI groundout) and Tommy Joseph (he went 0-for-4) every Phillie had a hit in the win.
As usual, Hector Neris and Jeanmar Gomez slammed shut the door in the later innings.
The team will surely be tested this week against the Cubs and Tigers, and it will be interesting to see how close to the .500 mark the team is when it returns home.
