Philly police building evacuated for assault weapon, bomb

A Philadelphia Police Department building was evacuated late Saturday after a suspect’s pipe bomb and firearm were found inside.

The Attorney General’s Gun Violence Task Force brought a suspect in to the 35th District headquarters at 5960 North Broad St. around 10 p.m. The suspect, who was accused of straw purchasing weapons, had a backpack that allegedly contained an assault rifle and a pipe bomb, sources told NBC10.

Police said the bomb squad was called, and the entire building was evacuated. The device and weapon were recovered, and the building was cleared at 10:40 p.m. There were no injuries.

Officials are investigating the incident, and have not made a statement whether the suspect will face additional charges based on Saturday’s evacuation.
