PHOTOS: Mayor Nutter rappels down Center City skyscraper for charity

A normal day for Mayor Michael Nutter generally consists of meetings with government officials, press conferences and public events.

Friday was anything but normal. Nutter helped to raise money for charity by rappelling down a 22-story office building at 1515 Market Street. The event helped raise funds for Outward Bound, which provides outdoor leadership programs for youth and adults.

Dozens of interested passersby gathered and snapped away on their camera phones. Hanging from a harness and wearing a helmet with a camera, Nutter waved and gave the thumbs-up to workers in the building as he gradually made his way down on a chilly afternoon.

“It was great. I made a lot of new friends in the building,” Nutter joked with reporters after safely reaching the ground. “It was great. Very, very safe, I felt very, very comfortable in the harness.”

When asked what he thought after stepping off the ledge, he said, “‘Wow, I just stepped off the ledge of a 22-story building.'”

Each participant committed to raising at least $2,000 toward a total goal of $160,000 for Outward Bound. Raffle winners were also given the opportunity to take the plunge.
